A young woman shouted six chilling words before gouging out her own eyes outside a church. Kaylee Muthart, who turns 28 today, lives with optimism despite being blind since a meth-induced psychotic episode at age 20. Believing her act would bring her closer to God and save the world, she lost her sight permanently.
Diagnosed with bipolar disorder, Kaylee’s descent began after using meth-laced drugs following a breakup and mental breakdown. In a delusional state, she felt compelled to sacrifice her sight to prevent a catastrophic event. The incident occurred as she hallucinated near a church, culminating in her self-inflicted blindness.
Despite the tragic event, Kaylee has shown resilience. She embraced her faith, learned Braille, and acquired communication tools after attending a blind school and rehab. Reflecting on what life might have been without her actions, she envisions seeing the world again one day. She described her visual experiences post-blindness as surreal, noting the challenges of explaining them to others.
Now wearing prosthetic eyes, Kaylee views her blindness as a blessing that prevents relapse into drug use. She values her newfound perspective and inner strength, considering it a preferable alternative to addiction.
