“Margaree Salmon Association Utilizes Safe Electrofishing”

In recent years, the Margaree Salmon Association in northern Cape Breton has been utilizing electrofishing as a method to monitor fish populations in the Margaree River. This technique involves administering a brief electric shock to temporarily stun the fish, allowing the crews to safely capture, measure, and identify them before returning them to the water.

Michael Fabiano, the conservation co-ordinator of the association, mentioned that electrofishing operations are conducted from May to late September. The process typically results in a two per cent mortality rate among the thousands of fish handled each season. Fabiano emphasized that fish safety is the top priority, and electrofishing is avoided when water temperatures are too high.

To minimize the impact on fish, the crews carefully regulate the electric current to momentarily immobilize the fish. Crew members wear protective gear such as heavy rubber gloves and chest waders to prevent any accidents while working with electricity in water. Fortunately, there have been no serious incidents of electric shocks reported among crew members during Fabiano’s 18-month tenure with the organization.

The crews conduct surveys along the 120-kilometre river to identify key habitats and evaluate the overall health of the fish population. The majority of the catch comprises trout and Atlantic salmon, with occasional sightings of eels and lampreys. This season, the association has already captured and released approximately 1,800 fish from nine different streams, slightly lower than the previous year.

Paul MacNeil, the association’s president, highlighted the increased focus on scientific research due to reduced data collection efforts by Fisheries and Oceans Canada over the past five years. Established in 1982, the association recognized the importance of reliable data for monitoring river health amidst changing climate conditions.

To address the data gap, the association collaborated with the Chéticamp River Salmon Association to acquire electrofishing equipment. While manual fish counting is also conducted in the river, MacNeil emphasized that electrofishing provides more accurate data on juvenile fish populations within specific areas.

Overall, the use of electrofishing has proven to be an effective method for gathering essential data on fish populations in the Margaree River, aiding in conservation efforts and ensuring the long-term health of the ecosystem.
