“Ontario Man Convicted of Flamingo Theft & Cruelty”

Published:

In Las Vegas, a man from Ontario faced animal cruelty charges for taking a flamingo named Peachy from its habitat at a famous hotel. Mitchell Fairbarn was convicted by a Las Vegas court for harming the flamingo during a drunken act in the early morning hours of March 3. Fairbarn, who pleaded not guilty, could face up to four years in prison for the felony and additional jail time for the misdemeanor charges.

The incident occurred when Fairbarn, who had consumed a significant amount of alcohol, thought it would be a humorous prank to take the flamingo from the Flamingo Las Vegas Hotel and Casino. The habitat where Peachy resided is home to various wildlife, including Chilean flamingos, and is certified by the National Wildlife Federation.

During the trial, it was revealed that Fairbarn was captured on video carrying the flamingo through the hotel. The bird was later found shaking and bleeding, with injuries such as missing feathers and broken shafts. Peachy required medical treatment, including antibiotics and pain medication, to recover from the trauma caused by the incident.

Fairbarn, acknowledging his actions, emphasized that his intent was not to harm the flamingo but rather to play a joke. His lawyer stated that Fairbarn regrets his intoxicated behavior and never intended to cause harm to the bird. While deliberations began following the closing arguments, Peachy has since recovered and is in good health.

Animal rights advocates, including Nevada’s John Waudby, expressed satisfaction with the verdict, believing that justice was served for Peachy. The incident highlighted a string of recent animal cruelty cases at Las Vegas casinos, underscoring the importance of protecting wildlife and ensuring their well-being in such environments.
