A search for a new location for a library in the west end of St. John’s has encountered a setback, but an advocate remains optimistic about finding a suitable spot soon. The Michael Donovan Public Library ceased operations at the Waterford Valley Mall on Topsail Road when its lease expired two months ago. Despite efforts by the provincial government to secure a new site through a tender process, no proposals were submitted.
Josh Smee, vice-chair of the non-profit advisory board Friends of the St. John’s Public Library, expressed frustration and disappointment over the lack of progress. He emphasized the library’s importance to the community and its popularity among patrons, underscoring the need for a swift resolution. Smee highlighted the ongoing interest in reestablishing the library in the west end, acknowledging the void felt by library users.
The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure, in consultation with Newfoundland and Labrador Public Libraries, is assessing the situation and planning the next steps to ensure the library remains in the west end of St. John’s. Smee urged landlords with available space in the area to engage with the relocation process, emphasizing the significance of the library to the local community.
Library patron Juanette Anthony shared her experience of missing the Michael Donovan Public Library for its computer access and convenience. She expressed a desire for the library to reopen in a larger space within the same vicinity, equipped with more resources to cater to the needs of users. Anthony’s sentiment echoed the sentiments of many who valued the library’s services and resources.
Efforts continue to address the relocation challenge, with hopes for a successful outcome in the forthcoming revised tender. The community’s strong attachment to the library and the dedication of its staff underscore the importance of swiftly securing a new home for the cherished institution.
