Top-seeded Jannik Sinner has pulled out of the U.S. Open due to an ongoing right knee injury that has kept him out of action since his Wimbledon triumph. Sinner, who recently clinched his second consecutive Wimbledon title by defeating Alexander Zverev, opted out of the Montreal and Cincinnati tournaments, which usually precede the U.S. Open.
In a statement released on Friday, the 25-year-old Italian expressed his disappointment at not being able to participate in the upcoming U.S. Open, scheduled to commence on August 30. Despite intensive efforts by his team and medical staff, Sinner acknowledged that he requires more time to fully recover from his knee ailment.
Sinner, the 2024 U.S. Open winner, faced a tough defeat at the hands of Carlos Alcaraz in last year’s final. Alcaraz, who confirmed his readiness for the New York event after a lengthy absence due to a right wrist injury, has been a key rival of Sinner in recent men’s tennis history.
Their rivalry has been highlighted by their clashes in the past three Grand Slam finals in 2025, culminating in Alcaraz’s victory at the most recent encounter in New York. Sinner’s title defense was cut short by Alcaraz in a four-set battle following his triumph over Taylor Fritz in the 2024 final.
Sinner, enjoying a successful season with a record of 44-3 and six titles, notably faced a setback at the French Open earlier this year. Despite holding a two-set lead, he faltered in the heat against Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the second round. Sinner then made a strong comeback at Wimbledon, securing his fifth Grand Slam title.
This absence from the U.S. Open marks the first major tournament that Sinner will miss since his debut at the event in 2019.
