University of Waterloo doctoral student Kaveeshan Thurairajah, though not a Nobel Prize winner, proudly earned an Ig Nobel Prize. This year, Thurairajah and his team were awarded the Ig Nobel Physics Prize for their innovative work on creating a splash-free urinal.
When Thurairajah’s supervisor, fluid physicist Zhao Pan, shared the news of their win, the celebratory mood was marked by surprise and joy. The team designed various urinal prototypes, such as the Nautilus and Cornucopia, to achieve the ideal splash-free design. According to Thurairajah, the Nautilus design not only minimizes splashing but is also easier to maintain compared to the Cornucopia model.
At the awards ceremony in Zurich, Thurairajah and his colleagues sported bright yellow raincoats, prepared to be recognized for their quirky research.
